Blue light information

What is blue light?

Blue light is a colour in the visible light spectrum that can be seen by human eyes. It has a short wavelength, which means it produces higher amounts of energy than other colours in the spectrum.

How does blue light impact you?

Studies show that exposure to blue light can cause eye strain, fatigue, headaches and sleeplessness. Because digital screens emit blue light continuously, people who spend long hours in front of computers, phones or tablets are particularly affected.

Where does blue light come from?

Blue light is everywhere. It used to be that the only major source was the sun. Today we have brought blue light indoors through digital screens found on TVs, smartphones, computers, laptops, tablets and gaming systems, as well as LED and fluorescent lighting.

Natural blue light vs artificial blue light

Natural blue light from the sun plays an important role in regulating your body's sleep and wake cycles (your circadian rhythm). It also helps boost alertness, elevate mood, heighten reaction times and increase your overall sense of wellbeing.

Artificial blue light sources, including electronic devices and certain types of lighting, add to our daily exposure and can disrupt those natural rhythms, particularly in the evening when our bodies are preparing for sleep.

How can I reduce the effects of blue light?

There are several things you can do to lower your blue light exposure:

  • Wear BlueVision blue light filtering glasses to reduce the amount of harmful blue light reaching your eyes
  • Blink more often when looking at a screen to keep eyes lubricated
  • Take regular breaks away from digital devices
  • Keep your screen clean as a smudge free display reduces glare
  • Switch your device background from bright white to warmer tones in the evening
As one of the shortest, highest energy wavelengths in the light spectrum, blue light flickers more easily and for longer than weaker wavelengths, casting a glare that reduces visual contrast and causes eye strain. Our eyes have not evolved to filter this type of artificial light naturally.
